The decision

Haneda and Narita create different arrival chains. A direct train to a station does not remove the walk through a large interchange. When comparing Shinjuku with a Tokyo Station base, include the final station exit, luggage and the next morning’s route. An airport-side first night can make sense for a very late arrival, but it changes the following day’s start.

How to compare

Plan the complete arrival chain rather than the airport train alone: terminal, transport, final station exit and hotel entrance. A late arrival or heavy luggage can change the best base for your first night.

Group western and eastern Tokyo into separate days. Before booking, compare the hotel entrance with the station entrance and operator you will actually use. A station name alone does not describe the walk.

Before committing

Use your actual flight date and terminal in the transport operator’s planner. Check the last useful departure, ticket conditions, lift access and the walk after leaving the station. For a pre-arranged car, ask the hotel for the pickup point and how the driver should identify you. Save the hotel name and address offline in the local language. Treat an early return flight as a separate journey; the best arrival route may not operate at your departure time.
